I really enjoy looking at the photos and вдохновляюсь1 by people who buy old apartments or houses, renovate them, обновляют их2, and preserve the Russian spirit. Если бы ты знал(а)3 how deeply I’ve been influenced by this lately, and how well it’s helped me furnish my new pad.
So now I’d like to offer a Russian text about one apartment. Pay attention to every bit in bold. In advance, I took this text and the photos from the post here. Have a nosey.
На перекрёстке площади Никитских ворот прошла большая часть моей жизни. Рядом на Поварской жил мой дед, бабушка училась музыке в консерваторском училище в Мерзляковском переулке, на Арбате в Большом Афанасьевском жили родители, а выше по Тверскому бульвару находится Литературный институт, куда я поступил в начале нулевых, думая стать писателем. В квартире на Большой Никитской я провёл свои студенческие годы — можно было проснуться минут за двадцать до начала первой лекции по античной литературе4.

Я десять лет путешествовал по России и был очень увлечён дореволюционной эстетикой. Особенное впечатление на меня произвел отреставрированный деревянный терем в Асташово в Костромской области, проект не только большой красоты, но и невероятной глубины и смыслов.

Мне бы хотелось, чтобы наши интерьеры были более индивидуальными и стильными, а это вряд ли получится, если мы будем копировать снятую во время поездки в Стокгольм на airbnb студию. Мы же в Москве, а не в Стокгольме.

Если квартира досталась вам от родителей или бабушки, я бы обязательно использовал что-то, напоминающее о той эпохе. Советская винтажная мебель, несколько чашек, старый ивановский ситец — пусть это будет сложная история со следами уже ушедших поколений. Проще говоря, попробуйте использовать вещи ваших бабушек, а не покупать новое.

Последнее, я бы никогда не стал пытаться уменьшить бюджет8 ремонта, экономя на мастерах9. Хорошие рабочие — это половина успеха10. Мастера, который месяц11 the craftsman spent a month restoring a plaster cornice, лежа под потолком12 как Микеланджело, я помню до сих пор13 и очень ему благодарен.

If only you knew
At the crossroads of Nikitskiye Vorota square passed a large part of my life. Nearby, on Povarskaya Street, my grandfather lived, my grandmother studied music at the conservatory school in Merzlyakovsky lane, my parents lived on the Arbat in Bolshoy Afanasevsky lane, and further up Tverskoy Boulevard is the Literary Institute, where I enrolled in the early 2000s, thinking I’d become a writer. I spent my student years in an apartment on Bolshaya Nikitskaya; I could wake up just twenty minutes before the first lecture on ancient literature.
I traveled across Russia for ten years and became very captivated by pre-revolutionary aesthetics. One of the most impressive sights was a restored wooden terem in Astashovo (my goodness, I’ve made a post about it :), Kostroma Region, a project of both great and beautul as well as incredibly deep and meaningful.
Look for something in the attic of your dacha, maybe you'll find something for your new interior. I’d like our interiors to be more individual and stylish, and this is unlikely to happen if we simply copy a studio we rented on Airbnb during a trip to Stockholm. We’re in Moscow, not Stockholm.
(11). If the apartment was inherited from your parents or grandparents, I’d definitely incorporate something that reminds you of that era. Soviet vintage furniture, a few cups, old Ivanovo calico; let it tell a complicated story with traces of generations that have already passed. In simpler terms, try using things from your grandmothers rather than buying new ones.
