A letter to an interpreter of eternity from Schostakovich (Part 2)
Письмо Переводчику вечности от Шостаковича
И снова здравствуй.
How is it to read the letter juggling two languages? Little by little you adapt to reading the Russian texts; knowing just a few words you are able to grasp a meaning of the whole sentence. Что ж1, я обещала, in this letter разбор грамматической части2 will take place. Но прежде3 мне хочется ещё кое-что сказать о композиторе.
Дмитрий Шостакович — один из интереснейших русских композиторов, который был перфекционистом in diary notes, а в письмах less strict, funny. Самые интересные письма are, написанные композитором, those that адресованы его лучшему другу, theatre critic, Ивану Соллертинскому. Эти письма — a wonderful novel в письмах, и meaningful evidence о музыке, самом Шостаковиче и эпохе.
I’m fond of The Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2. It feels like you’ve grown 2 more lungs and are ready to breathe in all the beauty of Russian waltz. So, while you open the previous newsletter with a letter from Schostakovich, put it on a play.
Хотел я проехаться по морю до Батума и обратно, но номер не прошёл по самой вульгарной причине.
Notice the word order. The author started it from the verb highlighting his desire than when it was experienced.
Проехаться — про+ехать+ся. The prefix “про” means the end of a process lasted for a long time: прожить, проболтать, проспать, проболеть.
When we go, it is always on the suface of something, that’s why “по” preposition is used and the following word should be in Instrumental case because our activity “leaves the trace on the road”.
Since the author’s destinaion is Batumi city, we make it as a part of our idea (kee the goal in mind) that is why it is in Genitive case.
The case wasn’t successful due to a vulgar reason.
Номер не прошёл по вульгарн…. причин…. How to know the endings?
По чему? The question is suitable for Dative and Prepositional cases due to the preposition (eligible for both cases)… what to do? Причина ends in the Н consonant. We study a juncture Б-П, К-Г, С-З in order not to make an orphography mistake (always check out the letter position — before a vowel then Б, Г, З etc… But for foreigners it is not relevant as it’s better to learn the word as it is, of course if you’re not a philology student). So, if it is Н, then just keep in mind that in plural it will be added АМ — причинам. The ending is only in Dative case.
If you want to support my project, you can do it here financially.
It’s just one cup of good herbal tea.
До следующего письма.
