The Russian datcha
or a story of contrast with the Soviet datcha

За тобой закрывается калитка3, и ты сразу попадаешь в другой мир — спина выпрямляется4, темп замедляется, движения становятся плавными, речь — аккуратней.

The Russian datcha before the Russian revolution was a place in the outskirts of the region where people go to live in summertime, do gardening and other pleasant activities. During the Soviet time the datcha turned into a place where people worked to harvest potatoes, tomatoes and anything else as to eat it preserved during cold winter days (we do love to pickle cucumbers, tomatoes etc. make salads).
The owner of the Datcha styled in the pre revolutionary days studied the architecture of that period.
Для XIX века характерны высокие и узкие окна. У меня они чередуются узкие и двойные высотой 2,20 метра. Приходилось спорить с архитекторами до хрипоты5, но всё-таки отстояла6 <…>, потому что если делать плоские, тогда не происходит игры света, и выглядит всё совершенно по-другому».
Помимо самих окон хозяйку не меньше волновал вопрос7 вида из них. Поэтому окна спальни выходят на восток, а из комнаты дочки на третьем этаже самый красивый вид — на поле8.
Все комнаты выкрашены9 в яркие10 насыщенные11 цвета — синий, зелёный, коралловый, лиловый. Раньше так делали, чтобы интерьер выделялся на фоне белого снега.
The house is not a museum but a place to live as people lived before — читать в гамаке12, пить чай из самовара, играть в крокет с друзьями, обедать не на кухне, а в столовой13, ходить на реку купаться, варить варенье в медном тазу и вести неспешные беседы о будущем.

despite the fact that the verb ЗАВИСЕТЬ end with -ЕТЬ, therefore must belong to the 1st conjugation group, it is not. It is one of few exceptions, so you have to conjugate it according to 2nd group. See here.
